A new-look Republican Senate leadership team gathered in the halls of the State Capitol Thursday to officially announce their legislative priorities for the 2023 legislative session. Majority Leader Steve Gooch, R-Dahlonega was flanked by newly-elected Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and President Pro Tem John Kennedy, R-Macon, along with members of the Senate Majority Caucus to outline some broad agenda points that will be backed up by specific legislation as the session moves along.
“I am incredibly proud of the work that the Senate Republican Caucus has accomplished over the past few years,” said Gooch. “Building on a strong foundation, this new leadership team will focus on a few key policy areas that will work towards a brighter future for all Georgians. As we begin this new era, we are looking into ways to continue growing stronger at every level, from the statewide economy, to cities and communities, to individual families across our state.”
Those four main objectives include:
The Economy
Always first on the minds of Georgia voters, the GOP leaders said they will conduct a prudent income tax reform and tax credit review, as well as examine new taxpayer and homeowner relief initiatives. Also specifically noted – continuing to lay the groundwork for the electrification of transportation – the EV revolution is firmly en route.
Education
Another top priority, the Senate will push to improve literacy rates across the state, implement learning loss grants, and review degree requirements for state employment.
Public Safety
An issue that has reared its ugly head in recent years, the Senate hopes to take the lead in cracking down on violent street gangs, examining bail bond reform to make sure dangerous criminals aren’t quickly released, and enhancing school safety laws.
Health and Well-being
A broad swathe of issues including extended benefits for income-eligible pregnant women, increased support for foster families and children, and expanded telehealth services for underserved rural communities.
