Years in the making, the Cobb Veterans Memorial is getting closer to reality and this week it took another big step as LGE Community Credit Union became the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation’s (CVMF) first founding partner.
The CVMF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring all the veterans from Cobb County who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The group’s goal is to build the memorial that “will serve as a place of reflection, healing, and remembrance for veterans and their families.”
LGE Community Credit Union will be providing funding and support for the foundation as part of its commitment to Cobb County and its veterans.
“We are honored to partner with the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation and to support its mission to honor our veterans,” said Chris Leggett, President and CEO of LGE Community Credit Union. “As a community-focused credit union, we believe it is our responsibility to support the organizations that make our community stronger, and the Foundation’s work is a testament to that.”
The future memorial will be located adjacent to the Cobb Civic Center and Aquatics Center, at the corner of Fairground Street and South Marietta Parkway. The site is convenient to both Interstate 75 and downtown Marietta and was chosen partially because of its high visibility.
“The board of directors of the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation is so very proud that LGE is our generous Founding Partner. LGE’s leadership recognizes the importance of this memorial to honor our over 60,000 Cobb veterans, to educate our children on the value of service to our community and our nation, and to become part of the hub of services to veterans, active-duty military and their families in the months and years ahead” said Donna Rowe, President and CEO of the Cobb Veterans Memorial Foundation. “We are most grateful for LGE’s support, partnership, and dedication to our community and our veterans that gave so much for us to be free.”
The memorial will feature an Honor Wall to recognize veterans, a reflecting pool and green space with seating for over 2,000 people and a 142 foot star tower that will anchor the space.
“We are so excited to have LGE Community Credit Union as our initial Founding Partner for the Cobb Veterans Memorial Park,” said JoAnn Birrell, Cobb County District 3 Commissioner. “The memorial will be a wonderful tribute to all veterans who served, and we are truly grateful for their service and for our sponsors.”
The official groundbreaking for the Cobb Veterans Memorial was held in July of last year, with attendees from the CVMF and the Cobb County Commission joined by a number of elected officials and hundreds of Cobb County residents and veterans.
