You’ve heard about Marietta’s Big Chicken, but what about the Big Peanut in Turner County? Originally erected in 1975, the 20-foot tall sculpture of Georgia’s most prominent legume stood just outside of Ashburn, a small town in south Georgia. In 2018 though Hurricane Michael ripped through the state, destroying the monumental structure and removing one of I-75’s nuttiest landmarks. Turner County residents gathered up support to rebuild the monument, raising tens of thousands of dollars, headlined by an effort from local state Sen. Carden Summers and the state Dept. of Agriculture. A new builder was found, and this week the Big Peanut will be officially rededicated, serving not only as a local attraction but as a testament to agricultural heritage and resilience of the people of Turner Co.
