Vidalia onions are a true Georgia hallmark. The state’s official vegetable was only discovered in the 1930s in in Toombs County, and quickly became favored due to their sweet, crisp taste that they owe to South Georgia’s low sulfur content in its soil. The Vidalia Onion Act of 1986 laid out a strict growing region for Vidalia onions as 20 counties in South Georgia, and at its center, of course, the city of Vidalia. So it makes sense that Vidalia is home to the Vidalia Onion Museum, which features displays and exhibits documenting the history of the famous vegetable. And exciting news is on the horizon – the museum is working with SCAD students to design a new, bigger museum to be built in downtown Vidalia sometime next year.
