U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-GA, wants to ban illegal immigrants from buying firearms using government-issued IDs, and Tuesday he introduced the ‘No Guns for Illegal Aliens Act’ while expressing concerns about the possibility that people who are in the country illegally are able to purchase firearms through the same process a U.S. citizen.

According to Clyde, 19 states and Washington, D.C. currently offer driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) controversial Secure Docket Card pilot program is projected to distribute around 10,000 ID cards to illegal aliens released into the United States.

“Border Czar Kamala Harris has allowed criminal illegal aliens to enter our country and roam our streets,” said Clyde. “Meanwhile, radical liberals like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz are offering driver’s licenses to illegals — creating a recipe for disaster. As we await President Trump’s historic mass deportation effort, we must ensure illegal aliens with government-issued IDs cannot obtain firearms and wreak havoc on our communities.”

Clyde pointed out that under the Biden-Harris Administration, more than 600,000 illegal aliens with criminal histories have been released into the country. Alarmingly, he said, this includes 13,099 illegals convicted of homicide, 62,231 convicted of assault, and 13,423 convicted of weapon offenses.

“States like Georgia know the painful realities of illegal alien crime all too well. It’s imperative that we do more to protect Americans from dangerous illegal aliens, which is why I’m working to both prevent these criminals from purchasing guns and defend American citizens’ Second Amendment freedoms,” Clyde added.

Clyde and other Republican lawmakers are focused on violent crimes by illegal immigrants after several high-profile incidents in the last few years, including the killings of Laken Riley in Athens, Ga, Rachel Morin, and 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Clyde stated that while these high-profile killings did not involve a gun, he emphasized that progressive policies allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses could open the door to more crime.
