Local leaders and elected officials gathered earlier this month in Talbot County, outside Columbus, to mark the opening of the first battery plant in the state. The Mossy Branch Energy Facility, owned and operated by Georgia Power, features 6,700 batteries in 208 gray enclosures on 2.5 acres which store energy in hi-tech lithium-ion batteries, ready at a moment’s notice to discharge their stored energy into the power grid. It’s an important asset, especially as solar power becomes more prevalent, and carries enough electricity to power up to 55,000 homes. Georgia Power has also used its construction as a testing ground for future projects, putting Talbot Co. on the cutting edge of clean energy storage in the Southeast.
