The Floyd County School System in northwest Georgia came up with an innovative way to teach students about the ins and outs of elections – a campaign to choose a new district mascot. The candidates campaigned all fall up to November 5th, and the schools within the district had their own electoral college, with different schools having a certain number of votes based on their population. On election day students voted on paper ballots in gyms or classrooms, and the votes were tallied up that night. And there wasn’t any election drama – Floyd the Bear was the big winner, sweeping the ‘electoral college’ and winning a four year term as official district mascot. Floyd was sworn in by Superintendent Glenn White in a special inauguration ceremony using a Dr. Seuss book.
