The 2025 Georgia General Assembly session marked a resounding victory for Georgia’s veterans, reaffirming the state’s unwavering commitment to those who have served our nation. Thanks to the steadfast work of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service– along with the powerful advocacy of local veterans’ organizations like the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association– significant strides have been made in Veteran healthcare and support.
With overwhelming legislative support and the approval of Gov. Brian Kemp, $1.5 million has been allocated to address rising healthcare costs, and an additional $2 million has been secured to officially open the Sub-Acute Treatment Facility in Milledgeville. These critical investments will provide much-needed relief to veterans awaiting care at the Georgia War Veterans Homes in Milledgeville and Augusta, as well as those in urgent need of specialized behavioral health treatment who also require skilled nursing care.
This milestone is more than just a financial commitment. It is a profound statement that Georgia honors and values its veterans. Looking ahead, Patricia Ross, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service will brief the State Senate Appropriations Committee today on Fiscal Year 2026 funding. Commissioner Ross will advocate for a baseline increase of just over $1.5 million to keep up with rising healthcare costs and for additional funding of $2.1 million as recommended by the state House of Representatives to open 40 more beds at the Georgia War Veterans Homes.
Georgia’s veterans are deeply grateful to Governor Kemp and the Legislature for their vision, leadership and unwavering support. Their actions this session send a clear and powerful message: Georgia stands with its veterans— not just in words, but in action.
