Qcells, the solar panel manufacturer that has made northwest Georgia its American home base, is expanding its operations with a new plant in Cartersville called EcoRecycle. There the company will recycle end-of-life solar installations to recover valuable components, including aluminum, silver, copper and glass. Once fully operational, the facility will recycle more than 500,000 solar panels per year. Industry insiders point to solar recycling as an important part of the supply chain moving forward, as it can be cheaper, more efficient and use significantly less carbon emissions than using strictly new materials. It will also allow American-based solar companies, like Qcells, to become less reliant on China, the current king of the solar industry.
