Coastal Georgia historically hasn’t hurt for water – the benefit of being in such close proximity to major rivers as they flow into the ocean. But with the arrival of the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America site in Bryan County, and its massive demand for water, nearby Effingham County is preparing to build a major new surface water treatment plant, only the second of its kind in Coastal Georgia. The plant is part of a $500 million expansion of the region’s water infrastructure, approved by the state legislature in the spring. Savannah wants to increase its surface water treatment capacity to 100 million gallons per day, up from its current 58 million, providing plenty of room for growth in the rapidly-expanding region.
