Room 450 at the state Capitol building was packed yesterday for the first meeting of the state Senate Special Committee on Eliminating Georgia’s Income Tax chaired by state Sen. Blake Tillery, R-Vidalia. It was graced by the presence of Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a loud and leading voice in recent years for the gradual elimination of the tax. The major attraction at the meeting, though, was invitee Grover Norquist, longtime president of the Washington, D.C.-based Americans for Tax Reform.
Other prominent Republican state lawmakers have taken up the crusade to further lower the personal income tax rate from around 5 percent to zero in coming years. In fact, the General Assembly, along with Gov. Brian Kemp, has already been slowly reducing the rate incrementally since 2022. So Norquist told the assemblage that lawmakers must keep plugging away. Most lawmakers present seemed to agree and Tillery declared “the die has been cast.”
