A special election to find a replacement for former state Senator Brandon Beach, who headed to Washington earlier this year to to serve as U.S. treasurer, is headed to a runoff following Tuesday's results.

Six Republicans split the vote in the north Atlanta metro senate district, which contains parts of Cherokee and Fulton counties.  Meanwhile the one Democrat in the race, journalist Debra Shigley, actually managed to take first place with 40% of the vote.  But because no candidate received over 50% of the vote, it will go to a runoff on September 23rd.
