President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration will treat the violence-prone, far-left Antifa as a “domestic terrorist organization,” with a follow-up by the Department of National Intelligence (DNI), would have a direct impact on Atlanta and other major cities.
The DNI is reportedly investigating Antifa’s transnational ties and, if formally recommended by the DNI, the foreign terror group designation would then have to be approved by the State Department. (Presently, domestic law doesn’t specifically recognize “domestic terrorist organizations” although the terms are often used in law enforcement.)
An foreign terror designation, though, would allow sanctions against Antifa’s overseas networks and individuals, and criminalize American involvement in organizing with them or receiving funds. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) criminal statutes at the federal level could also be used against Antifa.
