Early fall in the North Georgia mountains means changing leaves, the first hint of frost on the air, football season and of course – apple picking! Ellijay, in Gilmer County, is known as the apple capital of the state, as its steep mountains create the perfect climate for apples, which need cooler temperatures to thrive. Explore Georgia has named multiple farms and orchards in the area as some of the top spots in the state for apple picking. B.J. Reece Orchards grows 20 different varieties of apples and has been family owned and operated since the 1960s. Meanwhile Hillcrest Orchards and Farms hosts the annual Apple Pickin’ Jubilee on the weekends, with music and dancing, an apple tree maze, and wagon rides through its expansive orchards. So pick a weekend and make sure you get up to the North Georgia mountains this fall!
