Two candidates have stepped forward to seek House District seat 121 in a special election – the seat left vacant when Republican Representative Marcus Wiedower announced his immediate resignation late last month. Wiedower, who has served this district since 2018, said he is stepping down to focus more on his expanding work as vice president of external affairs at Hillpointe, a real estate development and investment management firm.
The district covers south Athens, Watkinsville and portions of Oconee County. The election will take place Dec. 9, and a runoff, if needed, will be Jan. 6.
Wiedower has played a key role in the House – even serving as chairman of a budget subcommittee focused on general government spending. He is also currently leading a study committee that is looking at the impacts of expanding gambling in Georgia, an issue he has championed for several sessions of the General Assembly.
