Cities and towns across Georgia have their own New Year’s Eve traditions, but perhaps none are as unique as Perry’s – the Buzzard Drop. Hosted in Historic Downtown Perry, the annual event draws some 2,000 visitors, nearly 10% of the city’s population! The unique party draws its name from when the Perry water tower became a resting spot for migrating birds, who damaged the tower while resting on it. Town officials decided to install a plastic buzzard, including real feathers, on the tower as a solution, and it became a sort of mascot for Perry. Now the buzzard drops in the middle of downtown at midnight, kicking off a fireworks show and heralding the new year!
