A classic Southern New Year’s Day meal is black eyed peas and collard greens – meant to represent luck and financial prosperity in the new year.  But black eyed peas in Georgia are in a rough spot – once a common local crop, they’ve been decimated in recent years by the cowpea curculio, a devastating weevil that is nearly impossible to wipe out.  So now most black eyed peas on store shelves are from California or Texas, how’s that for luck!  SINKING…
