With the way Congress is working the past few decades, budget numbers are subject to many changes but there is good news for Georgia coming out of the appropriations process in Washington. Last week, the House passed the Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act.
The funding for Georgia will cover a number of projects across the state but a couple notable items, spotlighted by the relevant congressman, are some changes to the operations at Lake Lanier. It seems to be mostly a procedural issue, rather than funding, but the new measure introduced by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R- GA 9) will allow local partners more freedom to manage sites at Lake Lanier. Specifically, user fees that are collected at a site were previously limited to only be spent at that site, rather than spent at other sites within the Lake Lanier system. For a site that may in disrepair and is thus experiencing a decline in visitors, this can make it difficult to upgrade and increase user fee revenue from a resultant increase in visitors.
