The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Resources Division (CRD), in partnership with Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Georgia, have completed another artificial reef deployment off the Georgia coast. Artificial Reef MRY is 18 nautical miles east of Cumberland Island, with a depth of between 50 and 60 feet. Before this year, the only artificial reef items that had been deployed there were reef balls, concrete balls with holes in them to provide space for coral and fish to live on and around.
As of January 23 however, the reef is now also home to the “Metalmorphosis,” a 52-foot steel vessel that was the first deployment there in 25 years. The project required some additional coordination with the U.S. Navy as the area is also home to naval training areas for vessels coming out of Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.
