Three Georgia Congressmen - U.S. Reps. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Buddy Carter (GA-01) and Rick Allen (GA-12) – have introduced legislation to amend the Hurricane Insurance Protection- Wind Index (HIP-WI) program. The Farmers’ AID Relief Act would correct a flaw in the HIP-WI program that leans more on inaccurate data systems than it does the actual damage on the ground.

HIP-WI is managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is supposed to support farmers impacted by hurricanes. The program relies on storm-tracking data systems to determine eligibility. Alas, those systems are prone to inaccuracy and can leave farmers who were actually hit by a hurricane in a lurch.
