As lawmakers eye the final day of the 2026 session of the Georgia General Assembly looming on April 2, they are working to get critical bills across the finish line. Late last week, Senators gave unanimous approval to a bill by outgoing House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones, R-Milton, that addresses special completion schools – local educational agencies (LEAs) that can enroll students who are at least 18 years of age and have dropped out of school and are not currently enrolled in a public school in Georgia.
HB 907 requires local school systems located within the attendance zone of a completion special school to either enter into a collaborative operating agreement with the school or provide comparable programs and services for students in grades 9–12. These programs and services include dropout prevention, academic intervention, credit recovery and flexible scheduling. As part of this legislation, school systems must provide contact information for students who stop attending or withdraw within 10 school days.
