There are two legislative days left in the 2026 session of the Georgia General Assembly. And while education advocates wait anxiously to see if the Senate is going to pass the historic Literacy Bill -- a priority bill of Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington -- a number of education related bills are moving through the process.
Friday, SB 150, sponsored by Sen. Billy Hickman, R-Statesboro, sailed through the House. The bill would authorize Georgia’s return-to-work program for teachers by allowing retired educators to work full-time and draw retirement benefits while teaching in qualified positions following a one-year waiting period. This applies to teachers who retired after at least 30 year’s service, and who return to teach in high-needs areas, including math, science, special education, CTAE, and reading, writing, or English language arts with a dyslexia or reading endorsement.
