The clock is ticking, and Georgia’s May 16 Primary Election is less than five weeks away. Early voting starts April 27 and runs through May 15, and many eyes are on the state’s top races – for Governor, Lt. Governor, U.S. Congressional seats and the state’s race for U.S. Senate that could eventually impact the balance of political power in Washington DC.
With all that going on, it’s ironic that one race – probably the last one on the statewide ballot – is drawing a lot of attention this week. The race for Georgia’s top school official came into the spotlight this week when several top state Republicans endorsed a candidate in the race – and it wasn’t for their current State School Superintendent, who is also a Republican.
In a surprise move to many, Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns announced the endorsement of Republican candidate Dr. Bubba Longgrear to replace incumbent Richard Woods. This was followed the next morning by endorsements from House Education Chairman Chris Erwin and Senate Education & Youth Chairman Billy Hickman.
