There’s no question that the University of Georgia Bulldogs’ football team is the biggest show in town in Athens, but the city is about to have brand new squad to cheer for. An ownership group headlined by former UGA great David Pollack is bringing an Indoor Football League team to The Classic Center’s Akins Ford Arena, where they’ll start play in March of 2027. They will join the Athens Rock Lobsters (a minor league hockey team) as residents of the new arena, which opened in late 2024 and seats about 5,500 for sporting events. Pollack and his ownership group – which includes former Atlanta Brave Brian Jordan and Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis – are hosting a kickoff event later this month, where they’ll take input on potential team names.
