While Atlanta continues to struggle with its homelessness crisis, another Georgia city is seeing positive trends as it works to confront the issue. According to this year’s Point-in-Time study from the Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless, there are 582 people experiencing homelessness in Chatham County, down from 628 in 2025. Over the past three years, homeless encampments have fallen from 87 to 15 this year. Overall, Savannah has seen a 59% reduction in chronic homelessness since 2023. Savannah’s shelter programs have been successful, with 82% of those counted staying in shelters or housing programs rather than on the street, and many of those living in shelters are working full or part time. Of course, affordable housing and mental health access remain key issues, but perhaps Atlanta officials should take note of the strides in addressing homelessness made by its sister city to the southeast.
