Buddy Carter bill seeks life imprisonment for attempted political assassinations

Georgia’s outgoing Republican Congressman Buddy Carter wants stricter punishments for anyone attempting to assassinate federal officials. The introduction of the Zero Tolerance for Political Assassins Act, a bill mandating 25 years to life imprisonment for assassinations attempts, comes after several attempts against President Donald Trump since his return to office.

“Political violence erodes the very fabric of our democracy,” said Carter, who recently missed a runoff in the race for one of Georgia’s U.S. Senate seats. “In the United States, change is enacted by the people for the people. When radicalized individuals escalate hatred toward others over differing ideologies, they trample on the rights that every American exercises at the ballot box.”
