The World Cup is off to a hot start, and Atlanta’s biggest fan festival has been smashing success so far. The official FIFA Fan Festival in Centennial Olympic Park in Downtown drew more than 250,000 visitors in its first 10 days of operation, and is already adding additional days to meet demand. The free festival figures to be packed for the knockout stage, which started yesterday, and will feature the biggest teams in the world going head to head, including local favorites Mexico and of course, Team USA. Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
