Agriculture remains the number one industry in Georgia, and the state’s Ag Commissioner Tyler Harper wants to ensure stronger protections for farmers who continue to face significant challenges. Harper announced Monday that he is calling for the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to prioritize protections for American specialty crop producers as the bilateral negotiations of the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) continue.
Harper’s letter to Jamieson Greer points out that as produce imports from Mexico continue to rise, American farmers face strong competitive pressure. He raises significant concerns regarding economic impact, regulatory requirements, and national security. A third round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in Mexico City this week.
