The Alpharetta City Council has voted 4-3 to approve a massive redevelopment project at the site of the North Point Mall, which would be anchored by an NHL team. But there’s a catch – the project will only move forward if the city is awarded an expansion NHL franchise to fill the proposed 20,0000-seat arena that would anchor the development. Still though, it’s a major hurdle to clear, as now prospective ownership groups can point to the project plans as proof that they’re ready to play ball (drop the puck?). The site, modeled after Cobb County’s wildly successful Atlanta Battery, would include apartments, retail, restaurants and bars, all built around a sterling new ice hockey arena that would mark Georgia’s third NHL team after the Flames and Thrashers both moved away.
