Literacy quickly became a priority issue for Georgia lawmakers during the 2026 legislative session – particularly with Speaker of the House Jon Burns, R-Newington. Burns pushed for the passage of HB 1193 – historic legislation that was aimed at strengthening literacy across the state. With the Governor's signature last April, it became law.
And now the Georgia Literacy Task Force is taking shape. Speaker Burns announced his appointments to the task force Monday, and each appointee has been determined by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement to meet the qualifications and criteria established under the Georgia Early Literacy Act of 2026. The task force will be responsible for evaluating and recommending key components of Georgia’s literacy reform, including professional learning programs, reading screeners and high-quality instructional materials aligned with the state’s science-based literacy standards.
