It’s not often (if ever?) that the Atlanta Hawks feature in a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. But that’s exactly what happened this week, when U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-MO, used what he thought was a trip to a Hawks game by former special prosecutor Jack Smith as a ‘gotcha’ moment to link him to Fulton County DA Fani Willis. The problem? Smith never went to an Atlanta Hawks game, and the “Hawks game” referenced in text messages referred to an Iowa Hawkeyes game Smith attended in Maryland. Whoops! Meet Atlanta’s newest pro sports team
This week Atlanta’s new women’s soccer team was unveiled. Meet Atlanta City Football Club, Arthur Blank’s newest team, which will play in the NWSL starting in 2028. Boasting a phoenix in its logo and colors including “Atlanta Red,” “Georgia Peach” and “Dogwood White,” the team looks to reflect its home city and state, despite the generic name. It will play games in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and is opening a new training facility in Marietta, just down the road from older brother club Atlanta United.
