Concluding two years of activism and debate, the Georgia General Assembly on Thursday night passed what has been called the most significant loosening of gun restrictions of any state in America. The House passed House Bill 60 about a half-hour before the legislature adjourned for 2014. The vote was 112-58. The bill will now head to the governor for his signature or veto.

If it becomes law, the bill will allow licensed gun owners to carry weapons into churches that choose to allow them, and into bars, certain government buildings and other public places.

The so-called ‘campus carry’ provision – allowing weapons in certain areas of college campuses – was not included in the final bill.
