Generally speaking, I eschew military metaphors for elections, finding them trite. But one of my favorite quotes about politics comes from discussions among military strategists and logisticians. The quote, variously attributed, is “Amateurs talk strategy, professionals talk logistics.”

I would rewrite that for politics thusly: “Amateurs talk strategy; hobbyists talk polling; professionals talk targeting and turnout.”

In the setting of electoral politics, logistics means targeting and turning out your candidate’s votes, and this week, many Georgia professionals are looking at early voting statistics and trying to read the tea leaves. Here are some of the topline statistics from early and absentee voting so far.

Top Five Counties for Early/Absentee Votes
Fulton………..6180
DeKalb………4891
Muscogee…..4265
Cobb………….4112
Gwinnett……2448
