Two high-level Republicans who attended a May 7 Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) fund-raiser are under fire for aiding an organization that opposes Georgia’s illegal immigration control laws. Gov. Nathan Deal was originally to have appeared, but cancelled.
Conservative activists are criticizing both Secretary of State Brian Kemp and Attorney General Sam Olens for supporting GALEO, especially since it tried to block implementation of the 2011 Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act, fought the state’s e-verify law for employers and is a supporter of in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants. GALEO is also fighting Gainesville’s at-large voting system.
A sampling of the criticism from immigration enforcement activists is summed up by John Litland of Marietta:
“GALEO is an organization that is hell bent on open borders and legalizing all illegal aliens in our country, and is headed by (executive director) Jerry Gonzalez along with (Hollywood activist) Jane Fonda as a founding supporter. That should give you a feel for how much GALEO cares about America with that treasonous person a part of that organization.”
As for Olens and Kemp, Litland continues: “These people are charged with enforcing our laws and they have the nerve to attend a fund-raiser for a group that only wants to break them? I have a difficult time understanding why they were there.”
GALEO also opposes Georgia’s official English-in-government law and supports giving written driver’s license tests in multiple languages for foreigners seeking permanent residency. Interestingly, the May 7 fundraiser was also reportedly attended by state Rep. B.J. Pak, R-Lilburn, who helped block English-only permanent resident driver’s license test legislation.
