A move to turn a lane on Peachtree between Buckhead and Midtown is drawing fire from residents in the area and is starting to draw attention from commuters who travel the marquee road to get to and from work.
The proposal to eliminate an entire lane from Peachtree to create lanes for bicycles has implications for many who live outside of the relatively short distance of the road that comprises the proposed change. The area of Peachtree under consideration includes both Piedmont Hospital and the Shepard Spinal Center.
State DOT representatives have reportedly extended the time period for comments on the proposal. Atlanta’s active cycling community is advocating for the change, while residents of Buckhead and Midtown are reportedly furious over the additional traffic congestion on the road. Hanging in the balance are opinions of commuters and healthcare patients who are just becoming aware of the controversy.
The area comprises some of the state’s most affluent and active political donors and reportedly could have an impact of state DOT board elections (which take place among state legislators) in the future according to a well placed source.
Stay tuned to IA for the story as it develops.
