Surviving a political campaign is tough enough, but a pair of hopefuls learned on Wednesday if they survived the first hurdle: qualifying, or not qualifying, as a candidate.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp decided to disqualify Steve Reighard in state House of Representatives District 167. He’s a Democrat who sought to unseat freshman Rep. Jeff Jones, R-Brunswick. Since he was the only challenger, his disqualification means Jones is effectively re-elected.

However, Kemp decided that Perry Green is indeed qualified in state House of representatives District 105. He is a Democrat running against Rep. Joyce Chandler, R-Grayson. Another Republican and a Democrat are also contending for the seat.

In both cases, Kemp took the recommendation of an administrative law judge who held hearings on the facts.
