Another item perhaps lost amid a heated July 4th week news cycle, Georgia became home to the nation’s second largest utility by customer base, with more than 9 million customer across nine Southern states and a projected rate base of approximately $50 billion. Southern Company now has a new logo and is now the parent company of eleven different electric and gas utility companies.

Southern is now in charge of nearly 200,000 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines and more than 80,000 miles of gas pipelines along with a generating capacity of approximately 44,000 megawatts and 190 Bcf (as in Billions of cubic feet) of natural gas storage capacity. One billion cubic feet of gas can produce roughly enough for all of Delaware’s natural gas needs for a little over a week. The combined company is now home to 32,000 employees.
