The 2020 race for sheriff in Clayton County has gotten off to a wild start. Sheriff Victor Hill has issued arrest warrants for his announced opponent, former Clayton County deputy Robert Hawes. This comes a week after Hawes’ wife was arrested, and their son is currently being investigated in regards to making false statements regarding the disappearance of a department-issued weapon. It is unclear whether Hawes’ son “took” the weapon, or as Hawes claims, he “accidentally sold it to an Atlanta Police officer.” Hawes’ wife is also accused of sending harassing emails to Hill in regards to the missing weapon as well as the resignation of her husband.
