There’s no doubt that it has been a rough year for Georgia agriculture, but Commissioner Gary Black remains confident in the state’s industry and the work his office has done, most notably the Georgia Grown Program that pushes locally grown producers in a variety of markets.
The program has made school nutrition one of its primary focuses, with a goal of at least 20% of the menu at every public school in the state being locally grown and harvested by 2020. It also seeks to expand its marketplace both in the U.S. and abroad, bolstered by ardent support from the state and with a strong ally in Washington in the form of Secretary of Agriculture (and former Georgia governor) Sonny Perdue.
