InsiderAdvantage is being told by bipartisan sources that a new effort will develop in the 2020 General Assembly to have legislation introduced and pushed not only on behalf of a constitutional amendment to permit destination resort gaming but also for local option pari-mutuel horse wagering and sports betting.

This dovetails with Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan’s announcement of a Senate Gaming and Pari-Mutuel Wagering on Horse Racing and Growing Georgia’s Equine Industry Study Committee, pursuant to SR 367.

State Sen. Brandon Beach, R-Alpharetta, will chair the committee and state Sens. Ed Harbison, Tony Anderson and Nikema Williams will serve as members alongside Georgia Lottery Corp. President and CEO Gretchen Corbin. The goal: Educate the public on the economic impact and other benefits these new sources of revenue would bring to state (and HOPE scholarship) coffers if passed by the Legislature and ratified by voters,

“I have an abundance of faith in the work this committee will achieve in the upcoming weeks and months,” Duncan says. “It is imperative we properly evaluate this issue in order to unpack the potential economic impact this industry could bring to our state, and more specifically, the agricultural community. I look forward to seeing the fruits of this committee’s labor.”
