The hiring of Ángel Cabrera as Georgia Tech’s 12th president has mostly gone off without a hitch, with the move receiving praise from academics and alumni alike. But now a student group is calling for the University System Board of Regents to “reconsider their selection” of Cabrera due to the fact that as president of George Mason University he supported the hiring of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh as a visiting law professor.
In an open letter to the Board of Regents released earlier this summer, the Georgia Tech for Survivors claimed to be “dismayed by the selection of Angel Cabrera as our next university president,” saying that he “has demonstrated a lack of empathy and understanding towards gender and sexual minority students and survivors of sexual assault by allowing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, accused of multiple accounts of sexual misconduct, to be hired as a professor at Cabrera’s current institution, George Mason University.”
The group went silent in following months, until a new book revived sexual assault allegations against against Kavanaugh, despite the fact that the claims have been denied by Kavanaugh’s alleged victim. With their fervor reignited, GT for Survivors took up the banner of ridding themselves of Cabrera once more.
“This page and our movement went quiet at the end of the summer, but the ‘new’ allegations against Kavanaugh have kicked us back into gear. A university president who hired a man accused by multiple people of sexual misconduct should not lead our school,” the group posted on Facebook earlier this month. They have also voiced their support for a planned October 6th rally in Washington D.C. to demand Congress impeach Kavanaugh over the allegations.
For what it’s worth the group was not a fan of former President Bud Peterson either, claiming in its letter that he perpetuated a “cycle of ethics violations and administration turnover.”
