One downside of having a booming economy and record-low unemployment rates is that Georgia has run into a bit of a labor shortage, particularly in industries that require manual labor.
Under Labor Commissioner Mark Butler, Georgia has come up with a clever means of addressing that problem while also helping out with the state’s ongoing push for prison reform, a hallmark of the Nathan Deal era that is continuing into Gov. Brian Kemp’s tenure.
The Department of Labor works with companies in need of labor to connect them with individuals coming out of correctional facilities who need steady jobs to get them back on their feet and out of the cycle of criminal behavior. The department provides assistance in pursuing federal tax credits earmarked for this purpose, as well as monitoring workers if the employer feels a bit uneasy, which is to be expected.
