Five Georgia school districts have been named to the College Board’s 10th Annual AP District Honor Roll for expanding opportunities and improving student performance.
“Our number-one focus is on expanding opportunities for students in Georgia’s public schools,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “I commend these districts as they expand access to advanced coursework for their students, while maintaining a high standard of performance.”
According to the state Department of Education, the five Georgia districts honored are:
· Coweta County Schools
· Dade County Schools
· Forsyth County Schools
· Hart County Schools
· Whitfield County Schools
Districts earning Honor Roll designation are required to increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3 or higher for the past three years — from 2017 to 2019.
“With more students participating and succeeding in AP…more students are getting a head start on college by earning college credit during high school,” said Trevor Packer, senior vice president of AP and Instruction at the College Board. “We are pleased to honor the teachers and administrators who have worked to clear a path for more students of all backgrounds to advance through AP.”
The following criteria is used for inclusion on the Honor Roll:
● Increased participation/access to AP by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6% in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts.
● Increased or maintained percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students taking exams and increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students scoring 3+ on at least one AP Exam; and
● Improved performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2018 scoring a 3 or higher than those in 2016, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70% of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
