One lesser-known historical Georgian is Juliette Gordon Low, the Savannah native who in 1912 established the first U.S. Girl Guide group, the organization which would later become the Girl Scouts of America.  Inspired by England’s Girl Guides Low helped develop and grow the Girl Scouts into the national organization it is today, and her birthday, October 31st, is remembered as its “Founder’s Day.”  Low’s historic Savannah home is about to undergo a major renovation, and this month Girl Scout troops from Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were invited to participate in an archaeological dig on the property’s garden in search of artifacts belonging to the group’s original founder.  What an opportunity for the newest generation of Girl Scouts to learn about their history firsthand and experience an actual archaeological dig in Georgia’s oldest city.
