Georgia lawmakers spent much of the summer looking for ways to address the state’s high maternal mortality rate. Late last week — with crossover day looming — State Representative Sharon Cooper (R-Marietta) filed a bill she says will go a long way in the fight.
According to Cooper, who chairs the Health & Human Services Committee, House Bill 1114 would extend the duration of postpartum Medicaid coverage for new mothers from two months to six months. The bill appears to have the support of some of the most powerful leaders in the House. It is co-sponsored Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton), House Appropriations Committee Chairman Terry England (R-Auburn), House Majority Leader Jon Burns (R-Newington), Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources Chairman Katie Dempsey (R-Rome) and Appropriations Subcommittee on Health Chairman Butch Parrish (R-Swainsboro).
