Back in the early 1900’s in Augusta, a training wall was constructed down the middle of the Savannah River in order to facilitate commercial shipping navigation.  When commercial traffic ended in 1979, the wall remained, now serving only as an obstruction to recreational boaters and to the natural flow of the river.  Now the Army Corps of Engineers is weighing removing the wall entirely, making the stretch of the river safer and flow smoother.  Savannah Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus is in favor of the move, which would cost some $5 million and require Congressional funding.
