Election day in Georgia was a bit of a mess, to say the least, with results trickling in well into the night, and many not expected to be confirmed until later.

We will have more analysis on all of the key races that were decided Tuesday in the days to come – but here is what we know so far.

With 40 percent of the vote reporting as of midnight, Jon Ossoff maintains a strong lead in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, where the winner will face the incumbent David Perdue.  However, Ossoff stands at 46 percent of the total vote, and if he can not break 50 he will have to face either Sarah Riggs Amico or Teresa Tomlinson in an August runoff.

Several of the state’s Congressmen faced primary challengers – all won comfortably.  So too did Karen Handel in the 6th District GOP primary, where she will get her rematch against Rep. Lucy McBath.

District 7 is one of the key races to watch nationwide, and it appears that Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux, who lost by the slimmest of margins to the retiring Rep. Rob Woodall in 2018, will avoid a runoff and move on to the general election.  On the GOP side Rich McCormick holds a lead over Sen. Renee Unterman, but if his advantage stays just below 50 percent -where it was late Tuesday – the pair will move to a runoff where, as we have seen, anything is possible.

Up in District 9 a Republican runoff is certain, with controversial state Rep. Matt Gurtler and Andrew Clyde the likely participants.  Expect that race to get heated in a deep red district.

Likewise in District 14 it appears that Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and John Cowan will continue their dance into August in the race to replace Rep. Tom Graves.  The winner will face, (and be heavily favored over) Democrat Kevin Van Ausdal.

We will have more from a wildly eventful election day as the week continues – including some big down-the-ballot races and surprising results in the state legislature.
