On September 5, 1955, neighbors Joe Rogers and Tom Forkner opened the first Waffle House in Avondale Estates – then a far-out suburb of Atlanta. The idea was to give the 24-hour dining option. They surely had no idea that their idea would take first the state and then the nation by storm – 65 years later it boasts more than 1,900 locations and serves as one of the Peach State’s true cultural touchstones and most popular exports. State officials including Gov. Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr took to Twitter to wish the franchise a happy birthday, joining hundreds of well-wishers who like to frequent the comfort food classic morning, noon, and (late) night.
