The first doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine arrived in coastal Georgia Monday, set to be distributed to healthcare workers in Chatham and Glynn Counties this week. There were 5,850 doses of the vaccine delivered in the shipment, the first half of a two-dose series that was rushed to production via President Donald Trump’s “Operation Warp Speed.” The Georgia Department of Public Health for now is prioritizing frontline healthcare workers and residents at long-term care facilities, the groups most at risk from the virus. More shipments are expected in other parts of Georgia, including Metro Atlanta, later this week. Meanwhile Georgia lawmakers are preparing to deal with the logistics of how to distribute the vaccine to more rural parts of the state, which may lack some of the logistical infrastructure needed to receive and distribute the vaccine, which must be kept at sub-zero temperatures.
