The Georgia Historical Society’s annual Trustee Gala this year will honor a pair of Georgians who are making history of their own.  UPS Executive Chairman David Abney and Baranco Automotive Group COO Juanita Baranco will both be inducted as Georgia Trustees, one of the highest honors a Georgian can receive.

The original Georgia Trustees were a governing body appointed by King George II in 1732 to establish the colony of Georgia upon the principle of Non Sibi, Sed Aliis, “Not for Self, but for Others.”  In 2008 GHS, along with the office of then-Gov. Sonny Perdue, reestablished the trustees to honor those Georgians making a major impact on the state here in the 21st century.

Indeed Abney and Baranco are far from just notable business leaders.  Abney, a former a Trustee of The UPS Foundation and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is a member of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta as well as the Business Roundtable.  Baranco is a longtime community leader who was the first African American woman to chair the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents.

For the first time the event – normally held in person with more than 500 attendees – will be held virtually and broadcast to the public online for the first time.

“We are pleased and very excited to announce that the 2021 Trustees Gala will be televised with the assistance of our statewide broadcast partners, WPBA – Public Television Atlanta, and the Nexstar Media Group Stations in Georgia, including WSAV-TV Savannah, WRBL-TV Columbus, and WJBF-TV in Augusta,” said Dr. W. Todd Groce, President and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society.

“While we are extremely disappointed that we are unable to have our annual in-person event, we hope that seeing this program and learning about the lives of these two extraordinary Georgians will inspire us all to live up to the motto of the original Georgia Trustees, ‘Not for self, but for others.’”

The program, scheduled for June 5th at 8:00pm, will be simulcast on the GHS website at and on the GHS YouTube channel for those outside of Georgia or in an area not covered by one of GHS’ statewide broadcast partners.
